It’s happened to all of us. A great bite’s suddenly gone bad. A plunge in water temperature is often the perpetrator. Saltwater fish sulk - redfish, snook, tarpon, no matter the inshore species, their once chomping lips suddenly zip.
Nothing hampers the bite more than a drop in water temperature when a cold front tumbles in. (Or, dread the thought right now, once wintertime is upon us.) But just because Mother Nature attempts to toss her sodium-corroded monkey wrench your way doesn’t mean you have to struggle for strikes like everyone else. Just rig up a pheromone-infused Trigger X Saltwater softbait and fish it low and ultra slow and you’ll find the bite didn’t really turn as far south as you thought.
“Trigger X Saltwater is by far the best softbait when water temperatures fall,” says Naples, Florida fishing guide and Rapala Pro Angler, Ron Hueston. “Just hook one up and let it sit. No, really, that’s all you have to do. The pheromones in these softbaits really do the trick. And their lifelike looks add to the foolery.
“Trigger X is like fishing with cutbait but without the stink and mess.”
Trigger X is the only non-PVC softbait on the market that’s basted in a brew of species-specific Ultrabite® Pheromones. It’s not a scent fish smell or taste, but one of many hormones exuded by all living creatures. In the case of Trigger X Saltwater, it’s the fear pheromones produced by prey that wafts through the water and trips the feeding impulse of saline-going predator species.
Hueston’s ploy when water temps slip? He nips a Trigger X Saltwater softbait to a VMC circle or treble hook so the bait dangles freely. He instructs his clients to cast it under overhanging shrubbery or into potholes recessed in shallow sand flats. A lead weight attached just a few feet above the bait keeps the rig in place. Once in position, the bait’s only action is the natural motion created by waves and current. And that sleepy motion is what awakens the fish.
The bite in coldfront conditions can be light, so Hueston spools his spinning reels with Sufix 832 Advanced Superline because it has no stretch and his clients can detect hits easier. “And they can cast it further and with more accuracy than any other superline,” he adds.
Between the VMC hook and 832 mainline, Hueston ties a few feet of 25 to 40-pound-test Sufix 100% Fluorocarbon, which disappears underwater. Even the weariest fish can’t help themselves with what looks to be real forage with all those pheromones wafting in the water - that coupled with leader material that isn’t a visual deterrent.
“Another key to coldfront catching is matching the right shape of Trigger X to the forage the fish are feeding on,” continues Hueston. Trigger X Saltwater comes in four shapes inshore fish feed on most: Crab, Minnow, Paddle Tail Minnow and Shrimp - all offered in a full pallet of native, proven colors. “Ghost, by far, has been my all around best color in the clear waters I fish.”
Of course you can use Trigger X Saltwater in any weather condition. Work it when the water’s warm, or, like Hueston does, “deadstick” it when temperatures fall. Either way you’ll find Trigger X pheromone-infused softbaits are, by far, the best thing going in the salty seas.
